Chama, New Mexico and Antonio, Colorado
Be sure to pack the camera for this one. Voted by USA Today as the Best Scenic Train Ride in America (2016) and the Best Attraction in both New Mexico and Colorado (2017), Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad in Chama, New Mexico and Antonio, Colorado feature unspoiled western scenery and striking, coal-fired narrow gauge steam engines. Join Cumbres & Toltec for a full- or half-day trip that is almost beyond belief.
The train twists through some of the most dazzling scenery. Alpine meadows sprinkled with wildflowers give way to the towering conifers that frame the spectacular mountain vistas. At times, the train’s incline steepens against the Rocky Mountains to hug sheer rock faces and squeeze between rock walls. At certain heights, it is noticeably cooler, and snow flurries may even develop in summer. The highest trestle on the line is the 137-foot-tall Cascade Creek Trestle. From magnificent mountain scenery to sweeping meadows and forests, freckled with wildlife such as deer and bear, the views are nothing short of breathtaking.
At the halfway point, ghost town Osier, Colorado, guests enjoy a hot, made-from-scratch lunch buffet that is included in the ticket price. With choices of a turkey or meatloaf dinner, a full salad bar and daily rotating specials this buffet can satisfy the entire group at once. Freshly baked desserts including pies, cobblers and Toltec Gorge Catering’s famous triple chocolate cake leave everyone pleasantly stuffed as they board the train for the last leg of the ride.
In the summer months, Cumbres & Toltec can design a group program with special pricing for groups of 20 or more passengers. Motorcoach tours receive complimentary parking, rack cards, trip guides and access to a self-guided walking tour of the train yard. Escorts and drivers receive complimentary tickets. Planners can charter a coach car or a caboose for an additional fee. Check online for details on the nine different excursions. Daily excursions run from May 23 to October 18.
