Mount Washington Cog Railway
Mount Washington Cog Railway

The Mount Washington Cog Railway is the first mountain–climbing cog railway in the world and the only cog railway east of the Rocky Mountains. The Cog is in Bretton Woods village, the popular destination of the White Mountains of New Hampshire, six miles from the historic Mount Washington Hotel and just three hours north of Boston. In operation since 1869, The Cog has a long history of innovation and was designated as a National Historic Engineering Landmark in 1976.

The Cog has remained an important part of New Hampshire’s heritage and has maintained its historic roots. Passengers enjoy taking the three-hour round trip riding in a coach powered by a vintage coal-fired steam locomotive or modern biodiesel locomotives designed and built at the Railway.

No matter what motive power a passenger chooses, one cannot help experience a sense of adventure as the train begins the spectacular climb up a three-mile-long raised track to the 6, 288-foot summit of Mount Washington. Along the way, lively commentary is given from the brakemen about the many points of visual interest, and the incredible story of the railway.

As the train reaches the summit, the Sherman Adams Visitors Center comes into view. This hearty mountaintop facility houses a new weather exhibit, cafeteria, gift shop and restrooms. There is an hour to visit the 1853 Tip Top House, enjoy a snack, explore and take in the spectacular panoramic view, spanning the peaks above the clouds or on some days the mountains and valleys of New Hampshire.

Before or after their trip up the rails, visitors can take in the authentic railway station atmosphere at Marshfield Base Station. Many choose to enjoy lunch while watching the train operations indoors or out. The Cog Railway Museum, located in the lower level, tells visitors the fascinating story of how the railway came to be.

The Mount Washington Cog Railway, open May through November, is a must-do New England adventure and offers competitive group rates. The Cog is located at 3168 Base Road, Marshfield Station, NH just six miles from historic Bretton Woods and Rte. 302.
