Musical Instrument Museum
In Phoenix you will find a museum unlike any other in the world. The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) represents the musical instruments and music of every country in the world. Displaying nearly 6,000 musical instruments and associated objects, MIM has quickly become a favorite destination for music lovers, world travelers and culture enthusiasts. The museum, which celebrates its fifth anniversary in 2015, also offers monthly events, an acoustically superb theater hosting 200+ concerts per year and instructional workshops that enhance the immersive experience.
Using state‐of-the‐art audiovisual technology to show musical instruments being played in their original cultural context, MIM provides a one-of‐a‐kind experience to museum guests. The bulk of MIM’s collection is organized into five Geographical Galleries which feature exhibits for every country in the world.
Other highlights include the Artist Gallery, which displays instruments played by notable artists such as Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and more. Another favorite space is the Experience Gallery where guests can touch, play and hear an array of instruments ranging from banjos and a Theremin to a Javanese gamelan and a 10-foot gong.
MIM’s Target Gallery hosts special and traveling exhibitions, including, "Beyond the Beat: Drums of the World." This MIM-curated exhibition, on display through June 21, 2015, explores the immeasurable cultural and historical significance of drums around the world through the presentation of more than 100 drums from 45 countries. The collection is accompanied by dozens of videos, photographs and other multimedia content.
The museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and conveniently located off of two major freeways (Loop 101 and State Route 51). MIM is bus-accessible and groups can enter through the main entrance or through a private side entrance where they are greeted by knowledgeable museum guides who will lead them as they begin their journey. Custom dining options can be coordinated through Café Allegro by request. Groups are invited to participate in available tour add-ons such as concerts, “orientation” tours, workshops and more.
MIM has a dedicated team member onsite to work with tour operators and the museum offers incentives including net rates for tour groups and complimentary museum access for drivers and escorts.
