Centrally located in the mountains of West Virginia, Summersville offers endless opportunities for days filled with fun, adventure, history and relaxation. The city is home to the state's largest lake, Summersville Lake, which is a beautiful clear water lake stretching over 60 miles of shoreline and 2,800 acres of water. Summersville Lake is the perfect place for boating, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, hiking and even rock climbing. Summersville Dam is a great stop for tour buses, so take time to see the Howell-Bunger Valve Display while taking in the view of Summersville Dam. But be sure to save time to climb the 122 steps to the top of the Summersville Lake Retreat Lighthouse.
Enjoy some Civil War History at Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park. The Patterson House offers seasonal tours and the Battle of Carnifex Ferry will next be re-enacted in 2020 in early September. Bus groups will love a tour of Kirkwood Winery and the Isaiah Morgan Distillery, where they will see how the distillery’s Bourbon Whiskey is made and taste some of the 30 different wines the vineyard produces.

Shopping includes primitive shops, antiques, retail, and even an old-fashioned hardware store, Hardman's Hardware, in downtown Summersville. If you are a quilt enthusiast, stop by the Quilt Shoppe for some supplies. Antique collectors will want to visit Walnut Grove Antiques or Country Potpourri and Gauley River Rustics for some fantastic finds.
There are a host of festivals in the fall, when the foliage is absolutely gorgeous. From April through August, check out Thursday evening concerts at the Pavilion or any number of events scheduled throughout the year at the Summersville Arena & Conference Center. Summersville is easy to navigate and offers a large selection of lodging to match any budget. Restaurants range from fast food to fine dining, and dinner cruises are available on Summersville Lake from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
