Get Off the Beaten Path in Glen Rose, Texas

Glen Rose is the Dinosaur Capital of Texas as well as the Bluegrass Capital of Texas. It was also designated as the “Official Best Small Town Getaway in Texas 2018.” Though Somervell County is the second smallest county in Texas, it is packed with attractions, events and history. It is located at the northern portion of the hill country, so you will start to see the rolling hills, rivers and lots of beautiful scenery when you visit.

The history of Glen Rose is very interesting, and thirty of its buildings are on the National and State Historic Registry. Most of those buildings are on and around the historic Courthouse Square. You will find that a visit to the square will keep people occupied for hours. There are Mom & Pop boutiques, antique stores, restaurants as well as an old fashion soda fountain, where guests can order a malt or shake or check out candies from childhood.

Attractions include Dinosaur Valley State Park, Dinosaur World, The Creation Evidence Museum, Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, Barnard’s Mill Art Museum and Historical Courthouse Square. The passion play called The Promise runs September through October. Other activities include events at the Somervell County Expo Center and festivals held at certain times throughout the year. Glen Rose has Bluegrass Festivals, Dulcimer Festival and a wonderful hometown holiday experience.

Hotels in town include: Holiday Inn Express, Comfort Inn & Suites, Quality Inn, Best Western and LaQuinta, and if you book 10 rooms, the driver stays free. Call the Convention and Visitors Bureau for more possible incentives.

You can request what activities your tour would like, and the local CVB can put together a special group package. They can even provide a guided tour packed with History of the City at no charge. The CVB also offers a free downloadable app for Apple & Android devices called “Explore Glen Rose.” Contact the Glen Rose Convention & Visitors Center for more information at (254) 897-3081 or Kelly Harris at Kelly.harris@glenrosetexas.org.
