Romney, West Virginia
Located in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, you will find Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad. Operating since 1991, Potomac Eagle features a collection that includes 1920s open-window coaches, open-sided observation car, open-top gondola observation car, and two lounge cars: Chessie Club and Eagle Cañon.
Your journey begins at Wappocomo Station, about 1 ½ miles north of Romney, the oldest town in West Virginia. It is situated next to a charming homestead with a sprawling view of the mountains. Enjoy the sounds of vintage diesels as they lead you through beautiful pastures and farms dating back to the 1700s.
As you wind along the South Branch of the Potomac River, you will enter a visually-striking gorge known as The Trough. One of the most scenic spots along the South Branch, The Trough is home to American bald eagles. This six-mile-long gorge is very steep and is wide enough only for the river and railroad tracks.
There are three seating options available. Classic Club includes meal service (lunch and/or dinner depending on your excursion), complemented with Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad china. These beautifully restored lounge cars offer seating of couches and loveseats with tables and are climate-controlled.
Table Car features seating for four at each table. This is ideal for informal gatherings, catered events, on-train games and activities, and more. These heated cars also feature standard coach windows that open to enjoy the breeze.
Coach is similar to commuter train seating, with cushioned, high-back, bench-style reversible seats. Passengers can move the seat-back to face in either direction. Windows may be opened but heat is also available.
Two excursions are available: a three-hour Trough trip is offered Saturdays, last Sundays of each month, plus every weekend in September and nearly every day in October. There are also eight-hour all-day trips to Petersburg on the last Saturday of each month.
All excursions are round-trip and include narration. A concession car is available to purchase snacks and drinks. Sorry, no smoking, pets, or alcoholic beverages permitted. The season operates mid-May through October.
Special rates are available for groups of 20 or more. For more information or to make reservations, phone (304) 424-0736 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
