South Carolina Railroad Museum and
Rockton Rion & Western Railroad
Winnsboro, South Carolina
Looking for a unique and nostalgic experience for your tour? Look no further than Rockton Rion & Western Railroad, conveniently located five miles off I-77 in Winnsboro, South Carolina, and less than 20 minutes from Columbia. RR&W is the only passenger tourist railroad in the state and offers a 70-minute, 10-mile round trip through bucolic and historic Fairfield County. With historic sharecropper home remains, rustic hunter’s cabins, the historic Greenbrier School and a ride through a hand-hewn deep rock cut, the scenery offers vanishing vistas of a time long past.
A historic diesel locomotive that saw service either for the Army in the Korean War or at Shaw Air Force base pulls the train, and passengers have the option to ride in a closed coach or to experience the breeze and views first hand in a covered open air car. Convenient bus parking is available in the lot adjacent to the station. RR&W’s charter coordinator will greet your group, and tours of the railroad museum will be conducted before the train departs. Bus drivers are welcome to ride the train with the group at no charge or remain at the station if they prefer. Total time for the visit is approximately 2 hours plus any additional time for lunch on-site. A large, covered picnic area adjacent to the station and the parking lot is available for your group to use, but please have your tour members bring a picnic lunch.
The RR&W is a non-profit, all volunteer educational organization. It offers discounts to groups of 30 or more, and payment is accepted by check or credit card. RR&W usually requests a deposit to reserve the time as it operates their train as an exclusive charter for your group in most cases. This ensures the personal service and attention your tour will appreciate and what separates RR&W from other attractions in the area. Charter Group tours are available weekdays or Saturdays. Regular excursions operate Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. from late May to September. For more information or to book a tour and train ride or both, contact RR&W at (803) 635-9893 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
