Stop by the Summersville Dam overlook to take a gander at the replica Howell-Bunger Valve. Take a day and climb the steps to the top of the Summersville Lake Retreat Lighthouse for the most breathtaking view of the lake, but save time to visit one of the many beautiful overlooks and to enjoy some high adventure white-water rafting on the New or Gauley rivers.
History buffs will adore a visit to the Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park. Here, groups can visit the Henry Patterson Museum in season and walk the grounds of the battle between General William Rosecrans against Confederate commander Brigadier General John Floyd. This historic battle helped move West Virginia forward to statehood.
One does not have to be a sommelier to recognize the exquisite quality at Kirkwood Winery and Isaiah Morgan Distillery. There are at least 33 flavors of wine available here, as well as some of the best bourbon in the region. Isaiah Morgan Distillery, part of Kirkwood Winery, is the only place in West Virginia that makes and produces bourbon whiskey.
Shoppers will love the many primitive and antique shops, such as Walnut Grove Antiques and Country Potpourri/Gauley River Rustics for some great deals. Many visitors also find treasured souvenirs at the General Store at Mountain Lake Campground.
