Glen Rose, Texas
Glen Rose is a small town with quaint charm, and its historic downtown has more than thirty buildings on the National Historic Registry. They offer antique stores, boutiques, old-fashioned soda shops and so much more to explore, and their Courthouse Square is a great place to spend time. Faith-based tours might consider The Texas Amphitheatre, which has live performances of the religious musical The Promise every fall. As the Bluegrass Capital of Texas, Glen Rose hosts a three-day Bluegrass Festival in fall and spring. For more information, contact their CVB at (254) 897-3081 or visit glenrosetexas.net.
Dinosaur Valley State Park
Glen Rose is also the Dinosaur Capital of Texas, so aficionados definitely need to visit Dinosaur Valley State Park, which is not only a beautiful State Park that offers hiking, biking, and events but also the site of actual dinosaur footprints made by two different species that lived in the area. If you are interested in wagon rides or horseback riding, consider the Eagle Eye Ranch Carriage Company (817-382-9855). The park also has an interpretive center and a store with dinosaur-themed gifts, outdoor supplies, books, and other items for sale.
This family-friendly attraction has more than 150 life-sized dinosaur models scattered throughout 20 acres of park. Part museum diorama, part zoo enclosure, their static displays are the closest one can get to a real-life Jurassic Park. In addition to the footpaths, children can play on the playground or engage in hands-on activities like the Fossil Dig. There is even an enclosed museum with fossils and animatronics.
Creation Evidence Museum
Since 1984, The Creation Evidence Museum has been dedicated to refuting the theory of evolution in favor of Biblical creation. Their exhibits include a 25-foot replica of Noah’s Ark, an actual working replica of the Gutenberg Press, dinosaur prints, Native American and Israeli artifacts and a biosphere that, once built, they believe will re-create the antediluvian environment. The museum is open Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Fossil Rim Wildlife Center
Taking an African Safari is on most people’s bucket list, but with the high cost of travel, it is an item that many will never check off. Fortunately, wildlife refuges like the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center can simulate the experience without the trans-Atlantic flight. Visitors can drive through or take a guided tour of the park, where they will see animals as varied as giraffes, ostriches, rhinos, and cheetahs. Guests can even stay in the Lodge or at the Safari Camp.
