Reiman Gardens Iowa State University

Reiman Gardens is a 17-acre botanical garden located near the campus of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. It is a year-round destination featuring distinct gardens that are always changing with each season. Each year, Reiman Gardens creates a new theme that is featured in its horticultural displays. Popular attractions within the Gardens include the following:

Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing: One of the only indoor butterfly wings of its kind in the Midwest, this 2,500 square foot glass structure in the shape of a butterfly displays up to 800 exotic butterflies from up to 80 different species. The Butterfly Wing is truly an enchanting experience that is enjoyed year-round.

Griffith Buck Rose Collection: This collection of hardy roses features the breeding work of the late Dr. Griffith Buck, a former professor in the Iowa State University Horticulture Department.

Hughes Conservatory: Always 80 degrees and always beautiful. This indoor glass house contains lush, tropical collections of colorful and rare plants. The display is changed four times a year and is based on an annual Reiman Gardens theme.

Patty Jischke Children’s Garden: With agriculture as its theme, this Garden contains elements of an Iowa farm. It’s a favorite of all ages, complete with a covered bridge, a pair of water features, a splash pad, interactive displays for kids, and an open corn crib with tables and chairs perfectly set up for a delightful picnic lunch.

Sycamore Falls: Our newest attraction is sure to wow visitors with its incredible array of colors that explode like fireworks in the summer. You will be awed by a series of cascading pools and bright perennial plantings that surround the water feature’s path. An iconic tower overlooks the Sycamore Falls portion of Reiman Gardens.

Elwood, The World’s Largest Concrete Gnome: Visitors from all over the world make it a point to stop and see Elwood, our beloved garden gnome who towers 15 feet high. The unveiling of Elwood on Earth Day, April 22, 2010, became a world news event with coverage by more than 70 local, national, and world news outlets.
