Pike County Historical Society and Museum
Business Name: Pike County Historical Society and Museum
Long Business Description:

The Pike County Historical Society and Museum is housed in a 1904 neo-classical mansion which was referred to by many locals as "the white columns" in the 1950's and 60's.  The house was built for Dennis McLaughlin of Jersey City, NJ - a very successful, if just a bit shady, politician and largest holder of property in Bergen County, NJ in 1900.

The home was sold out of the family in 1930 and changed hands about every 7 years or so until the Pike County Historical Society purchased it in 1982 and turned it into a museum and historical society.  There are two floors of exhibits highlighting the people places and things which have made Pike County of historical note.

Our most famed artifact is The Lincoln Flag.  This is the flag which was placed under President Lincoln's head after he was shot at Ford's Theatre.  The flag is stained with the President's blood.

Other exhibits include the intriguing histories of The Lenape Indians - our first settlers.  Father Francis Craft - liaison between the U.S. Army and Sioux Indians at the Battle of Wounded Knee.  The Delaware and Hudson Canal and the coal industry in Pike and Wayne County.  Audubon's Birds.  Philosopher Charles Saunders and Madame Juliette Peirce. Western novelist Zane Grey.  Silent movies filmed in Milford.  Summer Camps and much more including an original 1850's Stagecoach - The Hiawatha!

The museum staff welcomes group tours and may also be available to interpret other historical sites in town including a one room school house and grain mill. (additional charge per person)
