Stuhr Museum
Stuhr Museum, located in Grand Island, Nebraska, is a captivating destination that brings the past to life, offering visitors a unique and immersive experience into the history of the people who called the Platte River Valley home. Spread across 200 acres, the museum includes a living history component and is dedicated to preserving and showcasing stories from our past that shaped the Midwest in the 19th century.
The Stuhr Building, open year-round, is home to beautifully-curated exhibits that include artifacts, photos, and accounts of the past from real-life people. A portion of the exhibit space is dedicated to rotating exhibits, which range from specific historic events to art exhibitions.
Education is integral to the museum’s mission, ensuring that visitors of all ages can engage with history in a meaningful way. From educational programs and school field trips to workshops and living history demonstrations, the museum strives to make the past accessible and relevant to contemporary audiences.
One of the largest draws to Stuhr Museum is Railroad Town, available from May through mid-September each year. A meticulously recreated town transports visitors back in time, as living historians occupy authentic buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries that have been relocated to the museum, creating a realistic setting that mirrors the daily life of settlers on the Nebraska prairie. Visitors can stroll down dirt streets lined with homes, businesses, and even a one-room schoolhouse, gaining a hands-on understanding of the challenges and triumphs of pioneer life. Skilled tradespeople, such as the blacksmith, are known to charm and entertain visitors to their shops.
The museum offers several amenities for tour groups, such as ample bus and motorcoach parking, on-site food service, souvenir shopping, and more! A number of programs and tours are readily available for groups year-round, or we can work with you to create a custom activity perfect for your group!
