Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad
Traveling I-70 across Kansas?? We’ve got a great ‘brake’ spot for you to visit!
Ride the Rails of Kansas History on the official Kansas Heritage Railroad!! We’re only 5 minutes off I-70.
Our trains depart from our 1887 Rock Island Depot for a two-hour excursion ride to Enterprise and return. As we travel through the Smoky Hill River Valley, you’ll learn how Kansas Railroads built Kansas communities and Kansas Agriculture. You’ll visit our replica grist mill using original 1880s milling equipment to create wholesome wheat and corn products which you can buy in the adjoining general store. Back in Abilene, you can tour our free Fred Schmidt Railroad Museum. Or, if the wild west is your thing, Abilene is also the end of the historic Chisolm Trail and one of Wild Bill Hickock’s last jobs. Old Abilene Town is adjacent to our depot, and you may be lucky enough to see an old-west gunfight on main street after your train ride.
Our A&SV vintage (circa 1902-1947) passenger cars are just right for a busload, they can hold 48-56 riders in air-conditioned comfort. We can arrange for a catered meal or box lunch to be served for you during the trip. Our Excursion season runs from mid-May through September from Thursday-Sunday. You can charter your own car for the trip, or ride along in our general admission cars. Charters, Dinner and Special Event trains are available almost anytime.
Abilene has a lot of history to offer you! The Eisenhower Presidential Museum and Library, National Greyhound Hall of Fame, rustic Old Abilene Town and the Dickinson County Heritage Center are all right next door. The Historic Seeley and Lebold Mansions are both nearby. Abilene’s Great Plains Theatre offers professional theatre presentations throughout the year.
