Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society
Discover Laura: Your Little Town Adventure Starts Here!
Discover the heart of pioneer life at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society, where history comes alive in the very town Laura Ingalls Wilder called home. Nestled in the rolling prairies of De Smet, our nonprofit museum invites visitors of all ages to explore the rich legacy of one of America’s most beloved authors and the enduring spirit of the Ingalls family.
Walk through the original homes where Laura lived—including the Surveyors’ House, the historic Ingalls Home, and the school she attended with her sister Carrie—all lovingly preserved and filled with authentic artifacts. Each room tells a story, from the crackle of the wood stove to the hand-stitched quilts and the historic drawings still visible on the original blackboard, echoing the resilience, creativity, and warmth of frontier life.
Our guided tours offer immersive storytelling, hands-on experiences, and a deep connection to the Little House books. Whether you're a lifelong fan or discovering Laura’s world for the first time, you’ll leave with a renewed appreciation for the values of courage, simplicity, and community.
The Memorial Society is more than a museum—it’s a living tribute. Throughout the year, we host seasonal events and educational programs that celebrate the skills and traditions of the 19th century. When possible, we invite special guests to demonstrate pioneer arts of all kinds, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the artistry and ingenuity of the past.
Your visit supports our mission to preserve Laura’s Legacy and share it with the world. As a nonprofit, we rely on the generosity of donors, volunteers, and guests to maintain our historic buildings, curate meaningful exhibits, and expand our outreach. Every ticket, donation, and kind word helps us continue this vital work.
